What can we do when we get to Port Albert?

The picturesque fishing village of Port Albert contains an impressive history which is displayed in the prize-winning Port Albert Maritime Museum and Warren Curry’s Port Albert Art Gallery. Visitors have many activities to choose from including taking a walk along the wharf, throwing a line in the first-class fishing location or hiring a boat or kayak from the jetty. Walk along the Christopher Robinson Walking Trail from the front of the Retreat to Seabank which is a 11.5km round trip.

The beautiful Tarra Bulga National Park is only a 40 minute away. Agnes Falls and Port Welshpool Long Jetty is just a 20 minute drive from the Port Albert Waterview Retreat. The world renowned Wilsons Promontory National Park is only an hour’s drive. There is lots more to see and do so click on the Attractions below and plan your trip to this lovely coastal town.

  • Port Albert Art Gallery Meet the artist, Warren Curry, when you visit his gallery. Warren is an accomplished and passionate artist who splits his time between Port Albert and the Greek Island of Corfu, where he leads artist tours. Warren was born in Yarram and although has travelled widely, calls Port Albert his home.

  • Port Albert Fishin’ Charters Brian Spiteri runs a fishing charter business out of Port Albert. Guests of our Retreat have enjoyed fishing success during their trip by catching several gummy sharks. Brian has photos on his facebook page to prove it!

  • Wyldside Charters Damien offers a 10% discount to our guests who book for one of his trips.

  • Yarram Courthouse Gallery The Gallery is run by a Committee of volunteers who mount wonderful exhibitions throughout the year. The historic Courthouse is the perfect setting for exhibitions with a shop full of locally produced artworks, craft pieces and produce. There is also an Information Centre and computer access and Wifi for visitors.

  • McLoughlins and Ninety Mile Beach Walk We highly recommend this nature walk during your stay in the area. Walk across the boardwalk to the boat ramp where you will see several pelicans (they are always there when we go!) waiting for the boats to come in. Cross over the foot bridge and walk through the native flora until you reach the beach. If you want to feel free, this is the place to be.

  • Port Welshpool Long Jetty Walk On a still day, you will find many fishers along the Jetty trying to catch a feed for the family. The recently opened Jetty is nearly a kilometer long and worth the walk.

  • Gippsland Regional Maritime Museum Port Albert Right in the heart of Port Albert, the Maritime Museum is packed with amazing artifacts and stories. Suitable for the whole family. Children will also love the outdoor area where they can play among the exhibits.

  • Mauzie’s Most Marvellous Vintage (fabulous vintage clothes), Toora For lovers of vintage clothes, this is a must-see museum and shop of amazing clothes, both male and female, as well as hats and handbags. It is a treasure trove of beautifully presented and lovingly looked after vintage items for sale.

Things to see and do in and around Port Albert….. starting from our doorstep!

Bike riding Tarra Trails

Bring your bikes and enjoy the scenery along the Port Albert to Yarram Rail Trail.

Further afield, there is a walking, cycling and horse riding trail that goes between Leongatha and Port Welshpool and offers stunning views of Wilsons Promontory en route as the undulating trail winds through dairy country and native bush.


Agnes Falls near Port Albert

is just 30 minutes from Port Albert Waterview Retreat and is a picture perfect place to picnic. Take a camera as there are stunning views on the way, of the countryside and over Corner Inlet to Wilson’s Prom. There are picnic tables, a shelter and wheelchair-friendly toilets. The falls are just a short walk from the carpark and are spectacular, especially after rainfall.

Christopher Robinson Walking Trail

Take a walk or bike ride along the Christopher Robinson Walking Trail named after Port Albert local and prominent Greenpeace activist, Christopher Robinson which runs along the front of the Retreat taking in the beautiful views of the coastal park. It’s approximately 11kms to Seabank and return. The area is a recognised internationally wetland listed under the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar, Iran 1971). The area is of significance as habitat for migratory wading birds. Look out for the mob of kangaroos in the distance grazing in the paddocks along the walk.


Wilsons Promontory National Park

An hour’s drive from the Retreat, Wilsons Prom is a national park run by Parks Victoria. Enjoy walking, hiking or swimming. You could easily spend a whole day at the Prom, taking in its natural beauty.


Tarra Bulga National Park

45 minutes from Port Albert. Enjoy a beautiful walk among the giant mountain ash and ancient myrtle beech trees and see the huge fern gullies as you walk across the swing bridge. There are picnic facilities, electric BBQs and an informative Visitors’ Centre. It’s always a couple of degrees cooler at Tarra Bulga so go prepared.


Port Albert New Year's Eve Celebrations

PORT ALBERT NYE FIREWORKS

The Port Albert community runs a family-friendly event each New Year’s Eve. There are market stalls and food trucks delighting the whole family and at 9.30pm a fantastic display of fireworks along the Port Albert harbour.


Port Albert Market

The Port Albert Market is held at the Port Albert Hall in Victoria Street on the 4th Sunday of every month from 10am – 2pm.
